I enjoyed the read and went on to read all the books that Kerouac published. The beat generation paved the way for my Hippie youth, Bruce Herron Wolf Creek

A friend recently visited Gary Snyder, of Dharma Bums notoriety, who is 96 and still living at home, albeit with help. Gary did a year on the original Crater Mountain lookout in 1952. If you've ever gone up to the summit you'll understand why it was kind of a crazy place to put a lookout.

Snyder was a lookout on Crater Mtn, as CAE says.

Jack Kerouac, who was a lookout on Desolation Pk a year or so earlier, wrote follow-up books to ‘On The Road’: Desolation Angels’ and ‘Dharma Bums’. Those later books were about Snyder, Allen Ginsburg and many others (all portrayed under aliases) and Kerouac’s dive into Buddhism, etc. The Gary Snyder character in those books was ‘Japhy Ryder’ …. as I recall.

I got to hear Snyder read his poetry a couple times in Colorado in the early ‘70’s.
He published many volumes of poetry. Dont think he ever published much in the way of prose fiction, though.
