Increased bear activity?

Post by Kara.Luckey » Wed Aug 19, 2026 10:44 pm

Has anyone else noticed unusually high bear activity? We've seen 4 of various sizes (so don't think they're the same animals) in the past 2 days in Mazama/Edelweiss area, 3 today alone - One on community trail near Goat Creek crossing, one on East Fawn Road, one near Edelweiss meadow, and one crossing Goat Creek Road near Weeman. Just curious if others have experienced the same.

I believe that since we had a short and mild winter that all wildlife is more present than usual.
In terms of bear activity it is normal on where I live on Wolf Creek.

I have noticed many fewer serviceberries were produced this year. I heave read that serviceberries are one of the bears' most important late summer food sources. This leads me to think that bears may be ranging more widely and "publicly" than past years to seek their fall fattening foods.
