Need plumber for sewage pump system

Post by dustin » Fri Jan 02, 2026 2:26 pm

There is a leak somewhere around the check valve assembly (when the water gets down to about 1-2 ft deep it sounds like a garden hose going into the tank). The pump can still keep up with it but I have to run it manually, then turn off the output valve each time to keep it from refilling from the Winthrop city sewage system.

Dustin,

I was the Zoeller Pump manufacturers representative in the PNW for 20 years. Most of the check valves in these systems (unless it's very old) are installed on the discharge pipe with either compression type joints that look like pipe unions, or using a rubber ends that are secured using hose clamps like a Fernco Coupling if you know what that is. You only hear the leak when the waste water drops below the level of the check valve and the fluid is hitting the walls of the sump basin. When the check valve is below the waste level you won't hear it. My guess is either the compression style " union" has vibrated loose or the hose clamp on the rubber coupling has failed. It's a simple repair and I would bet you could do it yourself. You should be able to find either type of check valve at any of the ACE Hardware stores in the valley. Also, the size of the discharge pipe is 2" in 99% of sewage household discharge systems. The pipe is most likely ABS plastic (black) or PVC (white). Doesn't matter, same outside diameter. same check valves. If the pipe is galvanized steel (doubtful unless the system is very old) the outside diameter is the same as the plastic pipe but corrosion of the pipe might be the cause of the leak ( a hole in the pipe or a pitted surface so the "union" or the rubber end/Hose clamp no longer seals). Hope that's not the case.

Hope this helps. Get back to me if you have any questions.
