Dog owners beware of salmon poisoning

Post by Julie Grialou » Fri Dec 26, 2025 4:38 pm

Hi Fellow Dog Owners,

I wanted to warn you about salmon poisoning, which is usually fatal to dogs if left untreated. Dogs can get it by licking or eating raw salmon (think salmon carcasses by the river, the hatchery, or dumped somewhere else by eagles). The poisoning comes from a bacteria that gets into the salmon, and it takes several days for an infected dog to have symptoms. Luckily, antibiotics are very effective at treating it. Our dog got it from somewhere around/near the fish hatchery on Wolf Creek Rd. We know of a couple other dog owners in the area whose dogs were also infected.

Thank you Julie. My dog was very sick, vomiting and diarrhea, the week before Thanksgiving.
Dr. Sarah Wines at the Brewster Vet Clinic was able to quickly diagnose and treat for salmon poisoning and he has recovered completely. This is a good time to leash dogs when near the river. Woof, woof.
