Diesel price per gallon is outrageous

Post by mikeparks » Fri Jun 27, 2025 6:56 am

Diesel price per gallon in Washington State is today the highest in the United States, even higher than in Hawaii.

Although petroleum prices are lower in the rest of the country than they have been for a long time, prices here are higher - much higher - especially diesel. The average price per gallon for diesel is less than $3.50 per gallon in most other states. Here in the Methow, it is now $5.00 at Hanks and $5.10 at Chevron. Why?

They do whatever they want 1%s rule the world. Get used to taking orders and bending over plenty of taxation without representation. Thats the future welcome

Keep in mind that everything moves by Diesel. Truck and train. All freight that moves in this state has a fuel surcharge added to the freight bill. The transportation industry is not going to eat this expense. The Carbon Tax is adding about 70 cent a gallon to our gas and diesel price in Washington and in the Methow we pay about 20 to 30 cent more due to being a tourist destination.

How does that "20 to 30 cent more due to being a tourist destination" come about? I assume it's not a tax. Did Hank (now Rosauers), Chevron, Mazama Store, just decide they'd up the price because of tourism? Considering how few cars are diesels these days, that wouldn't bring in much extra money.

It is sort of case of ‘pick your poison’. No one likes paying taxes - of any type. They are necessary, however.

I have a family member in Cincinnati. Oh yeah…CHEAP fuel there! I just checked…..
Right now regular gas is around $3 and diesel is $3.60. Sounds GREAT, right?

But….here is the trade off:

Ohio has a STATE Income TAX rate of about 3% of income.
Likewise, Cincinnati has a CITY income TAX rate that approaches 3%. YES - a city INCOME tax!
On say $60,000 income - that’s a bunch!

OH…and property TAXES? My relative owns a small 2 bedroom WW2 era home that he says “I’d be lucky to sell for $275K”.
His yearly property tax on that house? North of $6000!

And, yes…they also have a SALES tax rate similar to our’s here - 7-8%.

I figure I buy about 5 or 600 gallons of gas a year, here. I’ll gladly pay $1 or a $1.50++ extra on every gallon to avoid that sort of tax hell.

Hey all,

If y’all want cheaper diesel, go to the Winthrop Store in well, Winthrop! They’ve got diesel under $5/gallon. Only one diesel pump works, but yeah cheaper place the get it in the valley!! Plus the old school pump and then pay is pretty cool. Speaking of cool, they have an assortment of cool beverages and treats! :)

Randy, it's not so much that the new owners decided to jack up the price, but rather Hank had been selling diesel at cost to support the local contractors who survive with diesel vehicles. For a time you could buy at Hank's for less than the non-highway red diesel sold at Pacific Pride.

I wasn't suggesting anything about the new owners. I was just questioning Mike's assertion that our diesel prices were so much higher due to tourism.

Washington State gas tax is now 3rd highest in the nation behind California and Hawaii.
In this state, the combined gas tax and CO2 tax which is part of the state cap and invest program combine for a state gas tax totaling around 85 to 90 cents per gallon. The state budget just passed by the Democrats in Olympia raises the gas tax 6 cents more starting Tuesday, July 1st.
The federal gas tax adds l8.4 cents to the state total.
Buckle up......

This mornings Business News reports the average cost for a gallon of gas across the country is $3,16. Lowest rate for the 4th of July in 3 years.
Unfortunately, not for Washington or California who along with our State just raised the gas tax again.
