Roadwork on Goat Creek Rd

Post by wanderlust » Sun Jun 08, 2025 7:13 am

Does anyone what the deal is with the resurfacing on Goat Creek Rd?

They started...put down a rough/irregular surface on two or three sections, erected some warning signs, and then disappeared.

Is this going to be properly completed?

Welcome to the valley. Completely normal, you’ll see. Internet search ’chip seal’

Actually, what the county is doing on Goat Creek and other local roads is NOT chip sealing. I really don't know what to call it except "asphalt paving on the cheap".

The county crews are taking asphalt-coated chip, dumping it on the road and spreading it with a road grader. End result is rough and uneven.

This is very different from a chip seal operation. If you look at the recent operations on Highway 20 west of downtown, you will see 4 "lines" of chip seal, placed purposefully where wheel ruts occur due to the use of studded tires. Those lines are now clean, solid and flat.

Whereas the "paving" done by the county is uneven and rough. Not sure who invented that process but IMHO they should trash it and revert to good ole, proven chip seals.

I noticed the same sort of thing on upper Bear Creek, starting near the golf course.

I think what MAY be happening is something I’ve heard called ‘pre-leveling’….where the local crews fill in the dips and imperfections, prior to a contractor or other crew coming in and doing a complete chip seal or a complete re-pave. They may be getting a bunch of road segments ready for the future work to happen all at once.

(On the other hand it might just sloppy work)

This is called pre-level. Goat Creek is one of the roads that will be chip sealed this summer.
Pre-level happens prior to the chip seal to do exactly what is says...level the road.

I’m afraid what was done doesn’t qualify as level. Let’s hope the chip seal helps.
