Vote with Your Dollar

Post by abrookes » Sun Feb 16, 2025 3:54 pm

If you value American democracy and our public lands and also use a Tesla, Starlink, or invest in any of our new oligarch's companies, please consider what you're supporting. Get on the right side of history and don't be complicit. Divest.

Yes! I've seen "I bought this before Elon decided to be a supervillain" bumper stickers. If someone already owns a Tesla, what do you think the most effective way to divest would be? Asking for a friend who hates owning a Tesla now, but isn't sure that selling it to someone else would really help anything.

As a Tesla owner who can not wait to turn in our car when the lease ends (we can't afford to turn it in early, unfortunately), I would also extend this sentiment to include:

"Vote with your Data and your Dollar"

Attention (time spent on a given app or website) is more valuable in today's world than the dollar. The way you spend your online attention allows companies to gather multitudes of data about you that other companies spend billions of dollars to get their hands on. This is why Facebook, for example, is free to you. You're paying with your data.

Divest from Facebook, Instagram, Twitter(x), Google, Amazon. It' s much cheaper than breaking the lease of a Tesla, and will have an immediate impact.

Since Tesla already has, or is, getting their money out of you, selling your truck to another owner should not help them, other than the moving advertisement. The most impactful thing you might be able to do, is put (a) magnetic sign or signs on it to display your displeasure with Musk and his endeavors. You might want to "duck duck" search (I refuse to use Google search engine) for the possible impacts on the vehicle skin, before you do so, to see if you can live with the possible cosmetic impacts of using the signs.

Also, don't forget that most of the regimes where your household goods are made are far, far worse than Trump. We aren't talking about preserving democracy in China, Vietnam, etc - there never wasn't one

So to prove your commitment to democracy AND maintain intellectual honesty, don't forget to divest from most household goods, any other mechanisms of Internet access (yes, your routers and computers were also made in China), etc...
