Tips for sulfur removal?

Post by michaelm » Mon Feb 03, 2025 7:08 pm

Anyone have recommendations on whole-house water filters, specifically for removing sulfur taste and smell?

I have a 3-canister carbon filter and it's not enough. In fact, the smell has gotten worse (maybe groundwater has shifted).

Looking for a solution to be plumbed in, not a Brita-type sink or pitcher filter.

Sulfur has to be oxidized out of the water. Typically that involves filtration systems that use compounds like ozone, chlorine, potassium permanganate, or hydrogen peroxide.

There are also systems that just use aeration, but that may take a longer time and require a larger, intermediate processing tank and also maybe less effective.

I would suggest test your well water. Then have your well scheduled for a shock treatment to oxidize the sulfur. Look into a 3m filter water system station on their website to meet your current & future needs if you decide you want to further upgrade your current basic cartridge system.

https://www.3m.com/3M/en_US/p/c/filtration-separation/water/i/consumer/home/

3M the chemical & product company. They are the industry standard in many fields that other companies try to compare & compete.

You can find all kinds of other water filter companies & water system technologies besides 3M. Just be wary of marketing hype & fancy advertising. I’m suggesting a well treatment first because it’s a simple approach. There are system technologies that use hardware backed techie aeration & backwashing systems to oxidize sulfur, iron, odor, etc., or ozone generators,& many other ingenious equipment systems. You have to ask yourself if you really want to go uber-tech a complicate the situation.Remember to step back out of the Forum & YouTube box. We have professional services for a reason to do certain jobs properly and safely. I like to think water is pretty important if it’s in a home.

Get your well treated by a professional service after you know what exactly your dealing with & what level of water quality you desire.Find out how your well responds to treatment with a follow up test. Then decide to if you actually need or really want more beyond your cartridge system to future proof water quality .
