Check out Repair Corps - they are doing a week of small engine repair this summer! You only have to pay for any parts needed for the repair.

The "Repair Corps" sounds like a great opportunity for young people aged 14-18 to learn small engine repair, it is free of charge and from what I understand they all get a $600 bonus for finishing the class that lasts 2 weeks.
The thing is they can only pick a limited number of repair projects and the class does not begin until June 29th. Sharpening a blade and replacing a cable seem like simple repairs, but maybe you could provide more details about this "John deere" mower. Is it a sit-down mower? Either way, it is relatively easy to remove blades for sharpening or replacement.
