We just got a notice from Okanogan County Elections about changes to our voting precinct. It seems it's now called "Twisp Wilderness". Anyone know how they came up with a name like that? Are there other edge of towns precincts in the Methow called "wilderness"? Is there an Omak Wilderness and a Malott Wilderness, too?

Interesting. In Lost River we sometimes refer to our area as the Savage Wilderness.

Perhaps call in on the Public Comment period at the BOCC meeting at 9:15 and ask the Commissioners. Or call the Auditors office.

Here is a link to the MVN article that explains the precinct redistricting process. https://methowvalleynews.com/2025/08/21/okanogan-county-revamps-election-precincts/

The new names are an attempt to describe the precinct. The one you are in stretches all the way from Twisp to the wilderness to the West. Thus the name. The new number describes the commissioner district you are in, and whether you are in a town or a rural area.

Getting in on the new policy, the Postal Service announced that mail carriers will be kitted out like Daniel Day-Lewis in Last of the Mohicans, Jeremiah Johnson and Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman and vehicles to be called Conestogas.

Thanks, Katie. The MVN article gives a good description of the process, though the end results are still pretty complicated. And it doesn't explain who gets to be called a "wilderness", given the number of close neighbors I have, for example.

I love the idea of calling Carlton area the Mediterranean wilderness. Can we ask the Commissioners to change our names?

Randy, good idea. Following the Winthrop example of themed town maybe the Carletonians could dress in togas and snack on olives while playing bocce on the former Carlton Mall site.

Instead of reining in property taxes and corresponding spending the Commissioners rename the precincts. Ridiculous, Bruce Herron Wolf Creek
