Grow your own

Post by Slade » Fri Nov 07, 2025 2:53 pm

What are the considerations for trying to grow Larch in the hills above the valley? I see it peter out coming off the Loup probably around 3000-3500'. I'm at 2500'. Just thinking of planting some trees and thinking Larch would add some color.

it does seem a little odd that larch is not more widespread at some of the higher elevations near valley level...i transplanted some small larches that were less than a foot tall a bit over 20 years ago and they have flourished to well over 25 feet,,at first i watered them in recent years i stopped watering them and they are doing great..the trunks are approx.6 to 8 inches now....there at about 2000 feet elev..in some good soil,,,.they certainly are a unique tree the autumnal color is super...enjoooooy......trees...........william>>>>>>tell

I have planted six or seven and they all have done well, I do water them in the summer, they are all over twelve feet tall, Bruce Herron Wolf Creek

Larch aka tamarack will grow nicely in the valley. We have one in our front yard. Alpine larch may not do as well.
