Monday, May 12, 2025 AM
• Sheriff/Morgue building update – Work continuing on schedule. Funds for communications upgrade are in progress and work will commence this year.
• Planning Dept update:
o new county code chapter 19 (on compliance);
o public information meeting scheduled for May 21st at the Winthrop Barn to talk about the planning and permitting process;
o BOCC approves changing new compliance officer position to part-time so that current employee can finish college degree;
o discussion about upcoming workshop facilitated by State and Sheilah Kennedy Delfeld.
• Fairgrounds update: Well drilling has begun, having trouble finding useable water- will continue punching holes;
• Maintenance Dept update:
o met with mechanical engineer who pointed out several potential issues with the geothermal heating system in jail;
o ceremony for new cornerstone at courthouse;
o status of lease on a building – need to get started on maintenance.
• Report on homeless housing plan from West/East Design : Final report will be provided later this summer. Review indicates that there are several challenges in our county, BOCC is looking for answers. Homeless point in time count increased dramatically between 2020 and 2024.
• BOCC adjourns for the day at 11:44.
Tuesday, May 13, 2025 AM
• Linda Pierce, Tammy Tatum, Kylie Corne and the commissioners discuss setting up a procedure to deal with animals being abused. A temporary shelter for animals in need of a foster home is included in the discussion.
• The fairgrounds received no bids for its water line project. Nick Bates, Fairgrounds Manager, now thinks they’ll be able to do the project in-house.
• During his weekly update, Josh Thomson, County Engineer, reports that a backhoe was stolen overnight from the Tonasket crew last week. It was insured, and Public Works is looking at used backhoes to replace the stolen one.
• Meeting adjourned at 11:10.
Tuesday, May 13, 2025, Board of Health meeting
• $119,000 Solid Waste contract approved; 25% in county matching funds for enforcement, quarry monitoring, help with document review.
• Contract with leadership training group upped by $15,000; Health Director pleased with progress board making on succession planning, strategic planning as a result.
• Commissioner Hover announces “clean audit” by state of county’s Public Health.
• Health Board preparing to relocate.
• Community being informed about measles prevention and danger of hantavirus.
• Health Officer’s report:
o influenza season longer than last year, three deaths registered, first in three years,
o measles cases often related to cross-border travel;
o highest pertussis rate in state but numbers decreasing;
o highest overdose rate in state with increasing ER visits but state numbers dropped in 2024;
o funds cut for hospital transfer coordination service, Okanogan is biggest user, more local coordination a possible solution
• Administrator attended training with Omak police on efficient new emergency overdose drug, Zurnai, says state still dependable supplier of addiction treatment suboxone
