Traditionally stories and teachings were shared around the fire during the cold, snowy months as a way to educate youth, pass on culture, and keep family history alive. Please join the Methow Valley Interpretive Center as we welcome native elder Arnold Cleveland togather around the proverbial fire to share stories about his life, family, and native culture. Arnold has seen 86 snows, and descends from p’squosa (Wenatchi), Entiat, Chelan, Methow, Okanogan, Kittitas, Wanapum, Nez Perce, Spokane, Snoqualmie, and Muckleshoot bands. Arnold is the 4th Great-grandson of Chief Owhi.
The evening will begin with a flute prayer followed by a short film featuring Arnold’s grandmother, revered elder Ida Nason Aronica (1888-1992) sharing stories of her own. Ida is the only Indigenous woman in Washington to have a public school named after her (Ida Nason Aronica Elementary School in Ellensburg). After the film we’ll keep the fire burning as we listen to Arnold’s words, stories, and delightful sense of humor.
Light refreshments including finger food and drinks will be provided.
All are welcome, admission is by donation.
