Highway Roundabouts

Sure as the sun comes up, Twisp going to get a roundabout. All in the name of safety.

According to Methow Conservancy's Population and Land Project, the Valley's population—including both full-time and part-time residents—is steadily expanding, with about a 14 percent increase between 2020 and 2025. It now stands well over 12,000.

You don't have to be a traffic engineer to notice the summer months bring a sizable increase in recreational traffic.

My prediction: Within 10 years or less, there will be at least one highway roundabout somewhere in the Valley. Stop lights just don't allow for a smooth flow of traffic during peak hours on a major WA State highway.

Too late now. When the Twisp Council was having public meetings to discuss whether or not all the development was a go or no go, only a handful of people showed up to voice their opinion. Most likely these developments and planned growth is already a done deal...

Personally, I like roundabouts. They eliminate the the stop and go traffic of stops signs and do slow down traffic at intersections to safer speeds. My only two gripes: people (some people) treat them like stop signs and will come to a complete stop regardless of the traffic in or not in the round about. And, you MUST signal your intentions as to where you are going to exit the round about. If you are making what would be a left or right turn out of the round about you MUST signal a right or left turn. No different then a standard intersection.

Gonzo, so glad you brought it up about signaling. Perhaps I wouldn't mind them so much if people would signal their intentions, but they don't do to...forgetting? Or they don't think it is necessary? Heck, I use my turn signals in Rosauer's parking lot.

Could it be because most people know that the developments are done deals before the public meetings? And also what is announced for the developments in advance of the public meetings may have been changed behind closed doors without any public notice.
