First Tuesday: In the Field at Beaver Food Forest Farm
When: Tuesday, September 2, at 6pm*

Join us on Twisp Carlton Road to see how Beaver Food Forest Farm is growing materials for ecological restoration, including future beaver food, as well as fresh produce. At Beaver Food Forest, ecosystem health and food production are intertwined! You'll see how Julie Vanderwal and Michael Schiesser are growing willow, aspen, cottonwood, and other species to someday support beavers and other wildlife in our local watersheds. You'll learn how luffa and birdhouse gourds are being grown to help improve local water quality without the conventional use of plastics in floating treatment wetlands. You'll see how nursery container plants look when grown differently from most potted plants in North America: without potting media ingredients extracted from peat wetlands, without mining, and without shipping materials (like coconut coir) across oceans. The farm also has various native plants growing in-ground at the farm, providing habitat for beneficial insects and birds, and serving as local sources of seeds and cuttings for propagation in the nursery. And, not to forget the food that humans can enjoy too, there are also black currants, aronia berries, elderberries, Saskatoon berries, vegetables – and fresh pasta at the farmstand! So much to learn; see you there!

This event is free and open to the public.

Carpool: Self-organized carpools will depart from the Twisp Community Center at 5:45, the Methow Conservancy in Winthrop at 5:30pm and the Mazama Community Club in Mazama at 5:10pm. Have extra seats in your car? Stop by and offer a ride.
