Where Have All the Mule Deer Gone???

Post by jayneal » Sat Jun 28, 2025 2:01 pm

For several years, the mule deer have been regular denizens in our area along East County Rd. It was pretty regular to have several in my yard every day year round, and at certain times maybe a couple dozen or more. This Spring so far they have largely disappeared from my view.

Anyone local naturalist-type, wildlife expert, have an accounting for what's going on here?

I counted eight in my yard last evening all bucks, Several were as large a mule deer as I have seen in the past ten years. Bruce Herron Wolf Creek

Compared to previous years very few in Lost River last year and so far this year as well. Quite notable and commented on out here in the savage wilderness. Same with bears.

We have some with fawns up Twisp River. Few bucks, it seems. Maybe because it is so dry, they've moved on to more lush territory?
Plenty of bear scat and some sightings.

Thus far we’ve had for the first time ever one doe with three fawns. Mom was standing in Wolf Creek and fawns were on the shore line … when mom walked out of the water all the little ones were eagerly looking for some dinner… also in the last few weeks we’ve had one doe with twins and one doe with just one fawn..
