Great communities don’t just happen - they take work and intention. Understanding how a community came to be can also help shape where it is going. The Shafer Museum is seeking volunteers willing to offer as little as 4 hours per month to keep Methow Valley pioneer history alive and connect others to stories from the past.
WHY VOLUNTEER?
Understanding the past is vital to making decisions about the future. Many residents may not know about the events that shaped this little corner of Washington. Volunteering at the Shafer will offer context to your community and you’ll be able to share that with guests, plus you’ll have some great trivia for friends and family! You’ll see this place differently, with a depth and meaning that you might not have had before.
WHAT DOES VOLUNTEERING LOOK LIKE?
There are many opportunities at the museum, but the biggest need is for museum hosts (docents). As a docent you volunteer either a morning or afternoon shift (less than 4 hours long). After a brief training session, you’ll have enough historical knowledge to confidently greet and engage with visitors, encourage children to complete a scavenger hunt and gain a better understanding of the place you call home.
Families that wish to volunteer with children (age 8+) are highly encouraged! This is a great opportunity to teach children about civic engagement, establish the habit of community involvement and shape their sense of place while building great social skills! You can volunteer just once per month, every other week or every week - whatever suits your schedule.
Please reach out if you are interested in volunteering! Docent training will begin in April.

Re: Share your love of the Methow Valley with others!
Can you volunteer for 3.5 hours one Saturday per month?
The Shafer Museum needs museum hosts (docents) to fill our Saturday shifts. You can choose between the AM shift (10-1:30) or PM (1:30-5) shift! This is the best time to be at the museum because so many wonderful people come through from all over the world. Share your love of the Methow Valley with others, learn more about the history of your community and help keep the Shafer Museum thriving!
