I have Madshus classic skin skis. I ski mostly easy trails and not for more than an hour or two.
I have some Vauhti clean and glide and some Pure One LD Liquid Glide that is appropriate for current temps.
I know not to wax the skins. The question is how do I know when I need to reapply the glide wax and, more difficult, when and how to reapply the Clean & Glide.
I got everything (skis and waxes) at Nordic Ultratune, which is no longer in business. Mark Waechter is now retired, sadly for us but happily for him.
Thanks for any advice.
Advice on using Vauhti liquid glide waxes
Re: Advice on using Vauhti liquid glide waxes
I've just started using liquid waxes this year (currently Swix) so am no real authority. I'm also pretty lazy with my waxing protocols and am not very serious or intensive about getting peak performance out of my mid-tier skis.
Usually I would clean my bases infrequently by ironing on and hot scraping hard wax, but with the liquid products (the Clean and Glide that you have) you can pretty easily do it before every glide wax. Every base cleaner I've used you just apply it as per instructions, let it dry and then brush with nylon brush until the base is smooth looking. Then you can apply your glide wax of choice.
The one tip I've heard about liquid glide waxes is to use a soft brush on them once they dry (usually 10 minutes or so) instead of the harder nylon ones. This has seemed to work pretty well for mine. I think Vauhti claims you can get up to 50km out of a single wax application (not sure about the Swix stuff I have, maybe similar?), so that provides a baseline for how often you might want to do it.
You might already know this, but don't get the base cleaner you have on your skins; there is a separate two part system for caring for the skins, where typically you brush in a cleaner in some manner, followed by something to improve skin glide/prevent icing. I just got skin skis so haven't done this yet, but it seems pretty straightforward.
