Recs for Randon Testing / Abatement

Post by wanderlust » Sat Nov 16, 2024 8:14 am

Hi,

I read an article about passive radon emissions in this area. I am curious if anyone has tested for this and experiences and/or has a recommendation for a firm that does test/abatement

Yes. Contact David Gerard, Advanced Radon Technologies, Inc. in Spokane. Excellent! He spent hours on the phone with us talking us through how to test, what equipment to use to test, and what steps to take to mitigate. We tried to pay him a consultant fee for all his time and he did not want payment!

If you're thinking about it, are a bit of a nerd (like I am!), I suggest pulling the trigger on an indoor air quality monitor that measures Radon.

Not only will this help you understand your radon levels (which you will find vary depending on the time of year, especially in the Methow with the snow coverage), but also the amount of particulate in your air (helpful during smoke season!), and also your Co2 levels (the air we exhale, if it accumulates and is not ventilated, can have a big impact on cognition and sleepiness!).

Personally, I'd recommend AirThings view plus: https://www.airthings.com/view-plus

We tested our air and water for radon with these self-test kits: https://sosradon.org/test-kits. They are affordable and results are fast.

For the last few months I have been monitoring radon levels using an Airthings Wave Radon monitor. It varies a lot, but it is not uncommon for it to spike up above 4 pCi/L (level at which EPA recommends taking action to mitigate exposure). The highest I've seen is 8 pCi/L. During the summer you can just open a window, but that's not such a nice option this time of year.

We also have Airthings and it works well
You can get a free radon test kit from the state of Washington. i’m sure you can find the needed details by searching
