Small round, fiberglass tub with tongue and groove siding... Tub leaks at upper intake. Access is through hard foam. Tub workings sit outside the tub and function fine. Not pretty, and the tub is old.

I've just inherited one of these with the exact same problem you are describing. Yesterday I tore it down to the primary gearbox. I'm tinkering and it might take a day or two but I'll let you know what I find. I'd go for the warranty claim in the meantime.
